Abortion is Murder

I was already reminded this morning that today is the 38th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Since that day, more than 50,000,000 people have been killed while in their mother's wombs--roughly one-fourth of every single pregnancy in America since that time.

Human life begins at conception. Some question that, but the clear teaching of the Bible, the facts of science, and the inevitability of logic point unmistakably to this conclusion. Others have written, more eloquently than I, from biblical, scientific, and logical perspectives, that abortion is nothing but the snuffing out of a human life.

If the life of somebody "outside the womb" is snuffed out by another human being, we call it murder. If the life of somebody "inside the womb" is snuffed out by another human being, it should still be called murder. Abortion, truly, is just a euphemism for murder.

NRA Statement on Judge Sotomayor

They e-mailed it to me today, and I don't think they will mind if I pass it on.

Joint Statement

Wayne Lapierre, Executive Vice President, National Rifle Association
And
Chris W. Cox, Executive Director, National Rifle Association - Institute For Legislative Action
On
Judge Sonia Sotomayor's Nomination To The United States Supreme Court

Other than declaring war, neither house of Congress has a more solemn responsibility than the Senate's role in confirming justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the Senate considers the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Americans have been watching to see whether this nominee - if confirmed - would respect the Second Amendment or side with those who have declared war on the rights of America's 80 million gun owners.

From the outset, the National Rifle Association has respected the confirmation process and hoped for mainstream answers to bedrock questions. Unfortunately, Judge Sotomayor's judicial record and testimony clearly demonstrate a hostile view of the Second Amendment and the fundamental right of self-defense guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.

It is only by ignoring history that any judge can say that the Second Amendment is not a fundamental right and does not apply to the states. The one part of the Bill of Rights that Congress clearly intended to apply to all Americans in passing the Fourteenth Amendment was the Second Amendment. History and congressional debate are clear on this point.

Yet Judge Sotomayor seems to believe that the Second Amendment is limited only to the residents of federal enclaves such as Washington, D.C. and does not protect all Americans living in every corner of this nation. In her Maloney opinion and during the confirmation hearings, she deliberately misread Supreme Court precedent to support her incorrect view.

In last year's historic Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees the individual's right to own firearms and recognizes the inherent right of self-defense. In addition, the Court required lower courts to apply the Twentieth Century cases it has used to incorporate a majority of the Bill of Rights to the States. Yet in her Maloney opinion, Judge Sotomayor dismissed that requirement, mistakenly relying instead on Nineteenth Century jurisprudence to hold that the Second Amendment does not apply to the States.

This nation was founded on a set of fundamental freedoms. Our Constitution does not give us those freedoms - it guarantees and protects them. The right to defend ourselves and our loved ones is one of those. The individual right to keep and bear arms is another. These truths are what define us as Americans. Yet, Judge Sotomayor takes an opposite view, contrary to the views of our Founding Fathers, the Supreme Court, and the vast majority of the American people.

We believe any individual who does not agree that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right and who does not respect our God-given right of self-defense should not serve on any court, much less the highest court in the land. Therefore, the National Rifle Association of America opposes the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the position of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Obama: Dangerous View of the Supreme Court?

President Obama, a man trained in the field of law, had this to say yesterday regarding the person he intends to nominate to the Supreme Court:

"I will seek someone who understands that justice isn't about some abstract legal theory or footnote in a casebook; it is also about how our laws affect the daily realities of people's lives, whether they can make a living and care for their families, whether they feel safe in their homes and welcome in their own nation," Obama said. "I view that quality of empathy, of understanding and identifying with people's hopes and struggles, as an essential ingredient for arriving at just decisions and outcomes."
This is a colossally dangerous viewpoint. You don't even have to read between the lines to realize he is emphasizing the view that we conservatives deem dangerous—that judges can and should put their views and prerogatives above the law, and should in fact bypass or rewrite the law as needed to see their views and prerogatives accomplished.

Let us review some basic concepts of American law (at least, they were basic at one time) and see how this measures up:
  • The Constitution is the highest law of the land. Obama: Empathy may supersede this.
  • The Congress makes the laws. Obama: Justice may require that judges ignore them.
  • Justice is blind, and favors none. Obama [quote from a 3/2/08 speech]: "I want my justice to understand that part of the role of the court is to look out for the people who don't have political power. The people who are on the outside. The people who aren't represented. The people who don't have a lot of money; who don't have connections. That's the role of the court."
That last quote, most likely, is a bunch of campaign swill anyhow. I strongly suspect Obama already knows whom he intends to nominate [pending a thorough vetting of tax returns] and that, like Franklin Roosevelt, he has every intention of nominating Supreme Court justices who see things his way and whom he expects will bend, stretch, or tear the Constitution and laws of this land to his liking.

This is a highly dangerous view of law and justice. This is one of the biggest reasons why we conservatives shuddered at his victory at the polls.

Elections matter. Take note of how your senators vote.

The Anniversary of a Day of Infamy

Not December 7, 1941....that day only killed a couple of thousand innocent Americans. The greater day of infamy was January 22, 1973, when the Supreme Court gave free reign to those who believe the murder of the unborn is a constitutionally protected privilege. Since then, something like 50,000,000 innocent Americans have been slaughtered in the cruelest and vilest ways imaginable.

In lieu of exercising my writing abilities, I will gladly request that you read this article by Nick DeLeeuw of RightMichigan.com, who both addresses our responsibilities as Christians and as citizens where this matter of abortion is concerned.

It saddens me that we now have a president—and a majority of Congress—who have no intention of changing the status quo. May God have mercy upon us.

Today's Reason NOT To Vote For Obama

According to this mlive.com story, Governor Jennifer Granholm may well be on Barack Obama's short list of nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court.

With three liberal justices now ages 89, 75, and 69, it is nearly certain that the next president will have an opportunity to shape the high court for the better; Justices Stevens, Ginsburg, and Souter have all been consistently liberal and unconstitutional in their judgments. To elect Obama is to virtually guarantee that any of them will be replaced with someone just as bad...or worse! Jennifer Granholm fits into that category.

Do you want to see Roe v. Wade overturned? Do you want to see the Court affirm private property rights? Don't vote for Obama!
